Criteria to consider:

·         Controversial issues are defined as those that are part of the History-Social Science curriculum, involve issues of social and political significance, have local, national, or international implications, and produce discussion characterized by multiple and conflicting perspectives, viewpoints, and opinions.

·         Particular emphasis will be placed on the strategies used by classroom teachers to develop critical thinking skills, present multiple perspectives, and ensure a balanced presentation for their students when teaching such issues.

·         Innovative strategies implemented by the teacher will be valued more than the implementation of a commercially published program.

·        Examples of effort and impact (e.g., description of teacher lessons or projects, student journals or other work) will be valued over purely anecdotal evidence

On an additional page, please describe as specifically as possible how this teacher meets the criteria described above to effectively include controversial issues in their classroom.
