MERRELL FRANKEL

INNOVATIVE SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER AWARD

Purpose:         Merrell Frankel was an outstanding teacher recognized as California Council for the Social Studies and National Council for the Social Studies Middle School Teacher of the Year for her innovative instructional practices and commitment to social justice through social studies education during her tenure at the Los Angeles Unified School District.  The purpose of the SCSSA Merrell Frankel Innovative Social Studies Teacher Award is to recognize a social studies teacher in Los Angeles County whose social studies instruction exemplifies innovative and engaging approaches to help students understand the past for achieving social justice in today’s society.

 

Eligibility Status:       

                                • Nominee must be a current member in SCSSA and CCSS at the time of nomination.

                              • Nominee must be teaching in grades 6-12, or must be teaching social studies at least one-half time in a departmentalized school.

• Nominee cannot be an elected member of the SCSSA or CCSS Executive Committee or a member of the Selection Committee at the time of the nomination.

·   Only one teacher per school can be nominated; five awards will be presented each year.

·   School of the nominee must be located in Los Angeles County.

                               

Award:            Each award recipient will honored at the at the SCSSA/Donald Perryman Fund for the Social Studies Awards Dinner on May 25, 2010 in Culver City, CA.

 

Required Documentation: It is the responsibility of the nominator to provide three copies of the nomination packet which includes:

·   Cover Page of Application

·   A letter of recommendation from the principal of the nominee’s school.

·   A printed narrative statement of not more than three pages, double-spaced, describing the nominee’s exemplary practice.                            

·   A vita or professional resume of the nominee.

·   Supporting documentation, limited to three items, may include reproductions of newspaper articles, teaching evaluations and letters of support not to exceed an additional ten pages.

·   E-mailed documentation will not be accepted.
