August 4-8, 2008
9:30 am-3:30 pm
This week-long professional development course is centered on
the exhibition Intersections: World Arts, Local Lives, and explores
ways that art in the Fowler's permanent collection and changing
exhibitions can build understanding of contemporary global issues
and help contextualize current events for K-12 students. Fowler
curators, local artists, and prominent scholars will lead
discussions on selected social and political issues referenced in
the artworks. Be the first to preview lessons from the newly
launched Intersections curriculum resource binder. Fowler educators
will demonstrate lessons from this rich unit of study throughout the
week.
Participants will:
-
Explore issues
of gender and power in African art.
-
Learn about the
history and legacy of apartheid in South Africa.
-
Visit the
Fowler's archeology collection facility.
-
Investigate the
"maquiladora murders" in Juarez, Mexico, and how artists and
writers in the United States and Mexico are working to educate
the public on these atrocities against women.
-
Discuss human
rights violations in Burma.
-
Examine Oaxacan
protest posters on view at the Fowler and then take an
introductory class on printmaking at Self-Help Graphics and Art.
The $75
registration fee includes refreshments and all materials.
