UPCOMING EVENTS

SCSSA Endorses Michelle Herczog for Vice President of NCSS!

The SCSSA is proud to officially endorse the candidacy of its own immediate past president, Michelle Herczog, for the vice presidency of our affiliate organization, the National Council for the Social Studies. Michelle’s unique and tireless contributions to quality social studies education in Los Angeles County and the State of California are substantial and well-known, most recently highlighted in her effective advocacy for civic literacy in our state capital, which resulted in the passage of AB 250, signed by Governor Brown in October. We can only see this advocacy multiplied if she were to hold this key national office, and she has already been a proven advocate for social studies in the nation’s capital. The SCSSA joins the California Council for the Social Studies in endorsing Michelle Herczog!

Voting is for NCSS members only, so please be sure your membership is current as of December 31, 2011! Join or renew your membership at the NCSS web site.

SCSSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Inconvenient Truths (Sept. 2009)

I began watching Al Gore’s movie last night while I rode my new exercise bike.  It’s part of my “New Year’s” Resolution to keep healthy and lower my blood pressure.

I started thinking:  there are a lot of “inconvenient truths” facing social studies educators now.   Funds for education in general and professional development in particular are drying up.  School sites and districts are cutting the budgets for attending conferences and other trainings.  Schools and teachers are once again asked to do more with less.
