Attendees: Amanda, Merrell, Ruben, Martha, Joel, Steve

9:19: meeting commenced
9:20: Review Minutes

minutes accepted

9:21: Teaching Elections

Merrell reports on upcoming event called Teaching Elections, a one day seminar to be held at Pickwick Gardens on May 17. 94 signees out of 100 slots. Some discussion of why the seminar is taking off: Merrell thinks it is the topic and the fact that the archdiocese is sending lots of teachers. Suggestion is made to tap into that network for future SCSSA events. Suggestion is made to create an exit poll to determine what attracted teachers to the seminar. Suggestion is made to collect email addresses of registrees. Suggestion is made that we could sell books, but Merrell is reluctant because other groups might not like being left out.

9:31: Other Business

Clean up sales account for Sonia N. book sales with Sarah. (done)

9:48: Museum Series

Everybody seems to be receptive to the idea, but there are some issues. Hinduism lacks a venue (and contacts, it seems). It is set for May. Merrell set on Judaism for June but will need to schedule for Thursday, 4:30-8:30, date not determined. Mark good on Christianity for April. Martha good on Buddhism in April. Amanda good on Islam for May - waiting for date from Michael.

9:59: Banquet

Venue: UCLA Faculty Center; dates not yet determined; Gary Nash to be Perryman awardee. Michelle will receive "building a strong social studies community" award for which a plaque needs to be purchased. (Merrell?)

10:25: Elections for the board

Ruben and others talk about establishing a slate and announcing details of the Banquet--including mentioning Michelle's award--in a mailer that should go out by March 8. Amanda wants to email, but in this case--due to the ballot--it appears that snailmail is better. All agree that emailing more things via an email list is the way SCSSA should move. Merrell suggests that by joining SCSSA, members should expect to receive email as a default. Members can always opt out, but default should be to receive email.

10:35: Slate

President: Martha Infante
President Elect: Joel Rothblatt
Past President: Amanda Roraback
Sec: Michael Denman (Are you up for it Michael?)
VP: Steven C. Williams
Treasurer: Ruben Zepeda
Members at large: Mark Ellinson, Merrell Frankel, Michelle Herczog, Jackie Purdy, Sarah Zepeda, Michael Sabin (Has anyone been left out?)

10:45: CCSS

Ruben talks about CCSS and why attendance is down so much: Oakland chosen as venue two years in a row. And NCSS conference in California this year. Down from 1200 to 400 attendees. $100K loss.

10:49: Amanda moves to pickup other agenda items at her place on April 24. She will email group with details in advance.

10:54: Move to adjourn.
