Minutes from previous board meeting read and approved Teaching Elections Conference Michelle commended Merrell for putting on an excellent conference. Letters need to be sent to: ¨ Arsalyn Foundation ¨ CRE (to John Hale and cc: Charles Quigley, Executive Drector) ¨ Bill Hayes, Presenter for CRF (cc: Jonathan Estarin, President) ¨ Merrell Frankel These letters are to thank presenters for their time and presentations. Awards Banquet Board members felt the banquet went nicely and that the UCLA Faculty Center was a great location. Martha believes next year’s President should have at least one other co-planner because the responsibility is too large for one person. Certain calendar dates should be set in stone so as to have more timely planning for the event. Calendar for 2008-2009 Martha suggested that a master calendar be planned and published by July of the new board year, so the group could plan ahead with important dates in mind. The master calendar should mostly remain unchanged each year so planning can be done in advance The following dates are set on the SCSSA Master Calendar
Specific calendar dates for the Awards Banquet are as follows:
February Honorees Selected SCCSSA BOARD MEETINGS FOR 08-09 WILL BE AT 9AM ON THE DATES OF THE PERRYMAN MEETINGS. THOSE DATES HAVE NOT BEEN DECIDED YET BY THE PERRYMAN BOARD. Fall Event A discussion was held on the benefits of continuing the Museum Series. Participation in this year’s series has been healthy, but we do not have the data to show us how participants found out about the event in the first place. Many received flyers in box or got emails. Although Martha sent out 1500 flyers to every single middle and high school in LAUSD but we do not know if the time, effort, and use of paper justifies continuing this practice. Many members are from the Archdiocese, where there seems to be a great interest in the series. Michelle proposed the Fall Event to be related to the summer Olympics in Beijing. The theme would be “China After the Olympics: What’s Next?” or “China and the World: Past, Present, Future.” The Bowers will be exhibiting the Terracotta Warriors, and this could be the focal point of the event. The brainstorm session resulted in the Fall Event to be a salary point class conducted over 5 Saturdays kicking off October 4th. Events are as follows: October 4th Terracotta Warriors at the Bowers Michelle November 8th Pacific-Asian Museum (Human rights focus) Mark December 6th Chinese American Museum Amanda January 31st* UCLA Fowler Museum Joel February 21st* Scholar presentation (possibly Clay Dube) Martha *dates flexible A discussion was held over whether scholars should be paid a stipend for their presentations (Mark felt strongly that they should) while others thought that providing them an opportunity to speak about their programs would be mutually beneficial and not require payment. In the event we do make a payment, we may be able to afford a $350 stipend for each scholar. Michelle suggested we contact Asian Studies leaders in the next few weeks as they set their own master calendars to see if we can co-sponsor an event based on the this China series. The meeting came to a close at almost 10:00 pm. Planning will continue at next board meeting.
