Constitution Day Over 100 people in attendance; 5 new members were recruited at the event. Some Nozario books still in our possession. Mini-Conference & Future Conference UTLA never printed the ad for the conference; they were kind enough to apologize Mark felt the timing and cost were off--$40 too much money Constitution Day paid the teachers to go; our mini-conference did not and that may have been the difference in getting the conference to fly. We did not lose any money from canceling except for having to refund the $1500 in exhibitor’s money. One challenge: textbook companies are providing customers with a lot more supplementary materials than ever before. Jackie: an alternative in which teachers learn something and take it away—especially in technology—might be better. A one-day workshop in which they could walk away with something like a CD that they can use to involve students would be attractive to educators and administrators. Other possible workshop topics: Meeting special needs in social studies-second language learners, gifted, special education. Merrell got a letter from a foundation offering to pay for a day conference on voting. One elementary, middle and high school session at a time, following the model of our mini-conference. Perryman Sale Made about $6500, about the same as last year. Weather played a factor in the overall turnout. Jackie: they were looking for audio-visual, advanced placement materials. Mostly elementary and high school teachers. Not too many middle school teachers. Fowler Museum They did not charge us for using their facility for the Sonia Nozario event. They returned the check to Sarah. Joel suggested we pass out their flyers at our events and put them in the newsletter. Membership Joel: Sunburst has an article about lead teachers to create a contact database. This lead person becomes the point of contact for every school. Postcards: One of Jackie’s teachers found a website in which you may design a postcard online. They charge only $5 for shipping. Outreach for National University-to tell the student teacher candidates about SCSSA. Steve & Michael: CSUDH & National University Database: NCSS Jackie: Southern California councils are responsible for assisting in the conference. The northern councils of Southern California are responsible for volunteer programs, including registration assistance with people in lines. Sandra Day O’Connor will be speaking! Marketplace is causing problems—craft fair. Can students/school groups sell as a fundraiser? Special rate for Southern California citizens CCSS Awards Due this month. Merrell wanted to recognize Michelle but she cannot be since she is CCSS president. Jackie—SSSA for NCSS next year. Also, eligible for Diane Brooks Award. Jonathan Weil can spearhead it. Perhaps Hilda Taba? Movie Nights Amanda has a contact in the industry. We have an offer for Run, Fat Boy, Run. March 28, 2008 is a possibility. We want them to come through us so that we can use it as a recruitment tool. Website Mark will send a paragraph to Amanda about Phyllis for the website. Museum Series Mark’s concern: They need to be at a location for 4 hours (multiple locations are okay). The focus will be religion. Mark says the first one could not be before late February, early March.
