Attendees: Martha, Joel, Michael, Merrell, Mark, Ruben, and Jackie NCSS Report Joel: CCSS received a silver award for membership; no major motions came out of the House of Representatives. Joel did approach a few exhibitors for our conference. The companies are looking to piggyback onto to other conferences to reduce their travel expenses. Joel Rothblatt co-presented at NCSS: World History for Us All “A Case Study on How to Modify a WHFUA Lesson for your Classroom” Co-Presenters Tim Kiern CSULB Christy Rodriguez-Long Beach Unified Linda Wohlman-Long Beach Unified CCSS Merrell: we have a fabulous program; 4 keynote speakers and a great panel of scholars; still could use more elementary presentations and world history 6-7th grade content workshops. Special event Friday night on economics paid for by LACOE. Olive and wine tour. Biggest concerns: 1) School districts are currently freezing budgets. We had targeted schools that were “High Priority School Grant Recipients” and have the money to spend. It is anticipated that this money will be unfrozen once districts hand back to the state certain % of their budget. 2) Exhibitors: Our numbers are down. Perhaps we can reach outside the world of education into other areas, -healthcare or banking for example? Exhibitors are also being encouraged to combine booths to reduce costs. The California Credit Union? At the current moment, registration for exhibitors and conference attendees is drastically down. Museum Series Updates: Mark went to the last one and there were 8 people. 30-35 people attended the first museum day at the Bower. The next event is at the Fowler Museum January 31. This may need to be changed if no one from SCSSA can help to present and lead the day. Mark raised the question of whether we’d be more effective at keeping attendees if we grouped the museum days more closely. Spreading them out reduces the likelihood of participants applying for district credit. Reagan Library has a new “Discovery Center” with information booklets for teachers, grades 4-8, participate in making a presidential decision. Lengthy discussion on the pedagogical effectiveness of classroom field trips. Perhaps we can present to principals to deal with concerns they might have about this? Scholar Presentation: Clay Dube on Asian Studies --February 21 1.5 hours lecture 1.5 hours teacher-led workshop 1 hour lunch Newsletter SCSSA is moving online. What now needs to be included? 1) Message from the President 2) CCSS/NCSS news and notes 3) SCSSA events and responsibilities- for example, slate for elections with descriptions of duties. 4) LACOE information—History Day, for example. The postcard can go out before the end of the month. Budget Two big expenses: CCSS and NCSS dues that are collected through LAUSD; When those get paid, we are spending around $6000-$7000 on this. When all our liabilities clear out, we have approximately $7000 in the bank. Recruitment/Outreach The idea of signing LAUSD teachers up for automatic deduction was proffered. Merrell suggested hitting up LAUSD teachers with partial year (perhaps 6 months) free membership New Business Michelle’s mother passed away. The funeral is Monday at 1 p.m. Our condolences and prayers to Michelle and her family. Merrell suggested we put the money into a dessert tray for the Shiva. Guests may stop by the house in the evening. The SCSSA holiday party on December 14, 2008 is still on. The Awards have been submitted. NCSS Elections: Michelle Herczog is running for ‘Other Professional’ position on the board. We can campaign and encourage people to run for her.
