Denny’s Meeting: December 8, 2007

Present: Michael Denman, Joel, Merrell, Amanda, Michael, Jackie, Mark, and Martha

I. Museum Series

Mark says it needs to be in place by January 15 in order to meet LAUSD calendar dates.

Tentative Timeline:

March (1 event: Martha Buddhism)

April (1 event: Mark: Christianity)

May (2 event: Michael: Hinduism; Amanda: Islam)

June (1 event: Merrell: Judaism)

II. Get Out the Vote

Several SCSSA members are running for CCSS office.

Merrell (V-P Executive Board); Amanda (Board member CCSS) Joel (Board of Directors). Merrell made the recommendation to do a phone tree or postcard “get out the vote” effort.

III. Membership Outreach

We do not have many of the glossy CCSS  brochures—Amanda will call Sarah and ask for more or create one for popular distribution. Further, Amanda will put the SCSSA application on the website.

Amanda asked that we try harder, maybe even consider a mini-board competition, to get more members. Who can recruit the most new members?

A discussion took place to get our website linked to more other professional sites. We are already linked on LAUSD. On our site, we will update with stories about the CCSS conference & Martha’s trip to Saudi Arabia. Amanda asked that we send her any content we have—she will update it in the next day or two.

February deadline—submit!

V. Activities

Movie Night: nothing happening on this front so far. The movie options are not social studies oriented.

Podcasting: Amanda has learned to podcast and would be willing to teach it to educators. Great classroom potential!

Conference: There is a company that wants SCSSA to organize a conference on voting. They would be responsible for the content of the workshop and SCSSA would be responsible for the organization—introducing speakers, registration, etc. Merrell was looking at the month of May. This may mean that one of the museum series dates would need to be moved.

Mark: If a group can get a certain number of teachers together, we would be willing to do a “road show” and bring the presenters to them.
