February 27, 2010 Members present: Joel/Merrell/Mark/Christian/Jackie/Martha/Amanda MINUTES Meeting began at 9:10 a.m. Jackie moves to approve minutes, Merrell seconds this. INNOVATIVE CIRCLES Jan 14, 2010 several teachers and two districts represented at 1st icircle meeting at Emerson MS. 2nd one postponed rescheduled to Southgate High, date unknown. Next one is March 24th at L.A. Academy by Martha Infante VERIFICATION OF ATTENDANCE FOR SALARY POINT FOR LAUSD Good response to the PD credit offered. A template has been created with our logo. Joel has this. CCSS CONFERENCE 350 pre paid, 50 exhibitors, usually 150 walk on registrations. Opening up a one day Saturday ticket when you buy membership. There is also a parent/student athlete ticket to Kareem presentation. There is a social event planned for Friday. Several non-profits are contributing to this one event. Saturday night banquet will be for the awards. One field trip is scheduled to the Huntington Library. Ten people are signed up. The Mayor of Pasadena is attending to open up the Declaration of Independence ceremony. Lots of press due to Amanda’s press releases. Amanda shared list of contacts compiled: LA Times, Glendale News-Press, Burbank Leader, Pasadena Star News, KTLA, AP, LA Observed, KNX, KPFK, Daily News, Colleges. Martha should send volunteer names to Jackie. Thursday afternoon we are bag stuffing at the conference center. CCSS booth will need help being staffed. Conference committee will be celebrating in Merrell’s suite. We need donations for first timers meeting and for booth. Where are we advertising the verification of attendance? Janice Davis at LAUSD says a signature is required for every presenter. Only sessions are eligible for credit, not keynotes. Mark will make up a letter for the conference and add signature space. INNOVATIVE CIRCLES All scheduled 4:15 to 5:30 but Joel went up to 6:15. The first one was held in Joel’s class, structured as a circle. Refreshments were shared. SCSSA was promoted. Fliers for conference were handed out. Everyone presents for no more than 15 minute. Strategy or lesson is shared. Give overview and handouts as hard copy and digital version. Participants downloaded the materials they liked and walked away with digital version. Send flyer to Amanda for email blast. Address, free, refreshments, verification. Amanda will try to do May. Jackie will do it in April at Mulholland. We can try to do the Lummis house on the eastside. Anthony Collatos is a professor at Pepperdine who does programs with students in Bell. UTLA building is a possible site for May. Martha will contact Susie Chow. Mark will look into Local District 5. Can we contact Little Tokyo. Michael Sabin would be a good contact. ARSALYN CONFERENCE May 15th is the Arsalyn event, which is a partnership with CRF, CCE, SCSSA curriculum ideas. If we could get the logo for SCSSA, we can put it in the program. If we can get space for that day, we can hold an innovative circle event to piggyback the Arsalyn event. Its location that HISTORY DAY History Day is at Azusa Pacific University on March 13th. We still need judges. There is a meeting at Mulholland MS this week. Voting booth and other materials can be offered by Arsalyn. Any town hall forums can be organized by this group as well. 8:30 to 2:00. Focus is on simulating elections. CRF is focusing on mock trials. CCE and Arsalyn partnering on a new curriculum on strictly voting for 5th graders. We want to do this event with SCSSA every year. Will work on getting a History Day award for next year. Mark suggests involving Linda Kidd, EL SS, Kylie Jackson, and Michael Reed. They are the social studies experts, Jay Gonzalez @Service Learning. They are all in the Office of Instruction. Nader del Navaz is their boss. Space is reserved for 50. Duarte and Glendora Unified audition as future teachers, they go to 5th grade students. SCSSA/PERRYMAN AWARD BANQUET Tentative location, Four Points Sheraton Tuesday, May 25th near Fox Hills. Merrell mentioned Ontario has 10 nominees, and they all pay their own way. Others suggest that awardees not have to pay because the whole point of our organization is to honor excellence in Social Studies. Merrell motions to request $250 for awards, Mark seconds the motion. Martha will do a mailing. Merrell and Martha will do the reading. All districts should get the notice. OTHER Professional Development Differentiated instruction PD was suggested by Jackie. History SS is being left out and any PD that addresses Differentiated Instruction is valuable. PAR workshop is a Social Studies K-12. Should we have PD’s for special interest educators, ie. African-American or Jewish educators? Joel knows author on Jewish Inquisition (Jonathan Kirsch). Could we give award? Agreement not reached. MEMBERSHIP/OUTREACH Postcards sent out with only one response from members without email addresses. Newsletter should be done with new members listed. Amanda will keep the master list of all email addresses. Amanda will print out a master list for all of us. There are several lists: · Master list · General interest list · Lead contact list · APSCS list We must advertise about the special one day price at CCSS in newsletter. Next newsletter will go out after the conference. FINANCIAL REPORT None given. Next meeting must include ballots, budget report, bylaws. Merrell moves to close meeting. Jackie seconds it. Meeting closes.
