Saturday, June 2, 2007

(Compiled by Michael Denman)

Time Started: 9:15

Attendance: Martha Infante, Steven Williams, Amanda Roraback, Merrell Frankel, Joel Rothblatt, Michelle Herczog, Michael Denman, Sarah Zepeda, Ruben Zepeda

I. Review of March 10, 2007 SCSSA minutes

  • Michael made a motion to approve the minutes

  • seconded by Steven and approved unanimously

II. Report on Museum Series

  • Amanda suggested a museum series centered on major world religions-Hindu, Islam, Buddhism. Leaders usually talk to the group and explain about their role in Los Angeles.

  • Michelle talked about “Bible as Literature” trend in classrooms-Georgia & Texas are opening those doors. Michelle thinks it would be a good topic for the series.

  • [One complaint from a museum series attendee, "not enough signs to let attendees know where to go." In the future, we will put detailed maps and other information on the web -- although Mark did a wonderful job giving teachers the information they needed.]

III. Banquet Report

  • banquet was wonderful! We missed the minimum of 50 by only two people—we were at 48 total attendees. Total lost: $128. Some payments are still outstanding. [only one outstanding - Steven Williams. AR]

  • one room for next year’s banquet!

IV. Sonia Nazario event

  • 25 confirmed, most of them people Martha knows. Flyers went out to every middle and high school.  The announcement in the UTLA newspaper did not go out. [Is it too late to put it on the UTLA website? Can someone take care of this?]

  • perhaps the numbers are low due to graduations across the county?

  • other sources of publicity: LA Times, LA Weekly, KPFK Public calendar [LA Times mention in Thursday's calendar is confirmed. LA Weekly was submitted. AR]

  • Saturday, June 9: 10:30 a.m. –the event opens to the public; 15 minutes welcome; built in time for the book signing at the end.

  • [We discussed having a VIP reception before the event. AR]

  • [Who has the SCSSA banner? Mark?]

V. Website report

  • looks amazing!

  • need people to also join the Google group on the website

  • Sarah will compile the names of people who register for membership and express interest to be put on the SCSSA listserve

  • It was decided that private communications can be kept on the .Mac account groups but the Google group will be used for public information

  • Need to link SCSSA website to Social Studies School Service and other relevant sites [Done. AR]

  • [Need links TO SCSSA from CCSS, NCSS, Social Studies School Services etc. Michelle was going to look into NCSS link. Anyone else? AR]

  • [It would be great to have more content on the site. Martha, I think you mentioned that you had explanations of some terms (Magnet schools etc.) I'd love to see a good glossary of terms on the site! Any other ideas? Perhaps links to news stories relevant to local Social Studies teachers.]

VI. Treasurer’s Report

  • 298 members in SCSSA. We get $10/member. Our membership may continue to decline with next year’s state conference in Northern California. (See below) NCSS conference is in Southern California but there is not much incentive for members to join local and state groups when attending at NCSS.

  • Mini-conference: September 29, 2007: Estimated income $800

  • $100/booth= $800 + $10/attendee = $1000

  • it is required, when raising membership dues, to put an announcement in the newsletter.

  • Sarah can process school purchase orders for the mini-conference

  • Can online registration be done? It is tough because there will be fees attached to it, whether it is Paypal or a regular bank. Joel asked if there might be a different rate for us as a non-profit? Will need to be investigated. [Who will investigate non-profit Paypal status?]

  • Michelle suggested pursuing university credit—perhaps it can be done through CSUDH? Sarah and Steve will work on this together.

  • Ron started up Saturdays at Social Studies is back up and going but it is not reflected in our current budget. Currently, we have made about $300!

  • Total Avg. Income: approximately $5450. Total expenses: $7450 for a budgeted loss of $2000. With the revised budget, we can net $740!!!

  • Our hope is to phase out the paper newsletter. We are currently putting only 3 newsletters out annually currently and have kept the price below budget.

  • Some discussion about how much to continue to spend on History Day L.A.-$600

  • Joel moved that the budget be approved and Steven seconded it.

VII. New Teacher Conference

  • September 29 is the date but we still need a location—either at Bravo or Los Angeles Academy. We will investigate fees for parking, security, etc.

  • Conference time: 8a.m - 3 p.m.

  • one-hour slots—three slots in the day’s workshop.

VIII. NCSS Conference

  • Michelle feels like we need to start recruiting members to work registration for the NCSS in San Diego Convention Center. Host hotel is ½ mile away (Hyatt).

  • Conference November 30-December 2. Perhaps I can have Kendrick help with some friends to help stuff materials?

IX. New Business

Political Stands

  • Martha wanted to know about the ability of SCSSA to promote political stands—ex. ability of undocumented students to apply for financial aid.

  • Ruben said that non-profits are not allowed to take political stands, but they can inform the public. You cannot tell people how to vote—that is when the problems come.

  • Editorials can be placed in a newsletter. Some room needs to be allowed for dissenting voices as well

  • [Steven - what would be required to have interactive forums on the website?]

X. CCSS Dues

·        CCSS dues are going up this year;

·        concern about what will happen with LAUSD payroll deduction since if the prices go up, people can opt out. May have negative fiscal impact.

  • [What kind of new incentives can we provide to get people to join? AR]

  • [We also talked about sending letters offering $10 off if renewals take place before fees go up (in September? AR)
