Attendance:  Amanda Roraback, Merrell Frankel, Mark Elinson, Joel Rothblatt, Martha Infante

 

1)      Conference

a.       Title

                                                               i.      Community, Civics and Controversy: Teaching Social Studies in Today’s Classroom.

b.      Expecting about 80-100 people

c.       Price

                                                               i.      $25 for members

                                                             ii.      $40 for non-members

1.      We need at least 48 member attendees to make $1200.

2.      We should make it easy for non-members to sign up on the spot.

3.      Also offer $5 discount if attendee becomes a member on site.

4.      and $5 off for payroll deduction.

                                                            iii.      $100 for vendors

d.      Schedule

                                                               i.      Open at 8 am.

                                                             ii.      8-8:30 Registration

                                                            iii.      8:30-9:30 First Session

                                                           iv.      9:45-10:45 Second Session

                                                             v.      11:00-12:00 Third Session

                                                           vi.      12:00-1:00 Lunch

                                                          vii.      1:00-2:00 Fourth Session

e.       Location?

                                                               i.      Bravo?

1.      $250 for custodial

2.      $250 for parking security.

2)      Banquet

a.       Merrell suggested having a “Teacher of the Year” every year.

3)      Website

a.       Should put a paragraph on Phyllis Hayashibara

b.      Link to Fowler Exhibits.

c.       Michelle to get link from CCSS.ORG

d.      Amanda will get links from others (NCSS etc.)

4)      Museum Series

a.       Islam – Amanda

b.      Christianity – Jackie??

c.       Judaism – Merrell and Mark

d.      Buddhism – Helen Ligh?

e.       Hinduism – Martha Infante

5)      Contacting the members

a.       Postcard should be sent to each member

                                                               i.      Allowing members to “opt-out” of receiving information by email.

                                                             ii.      Advertising conference

                                                            iii.      Advertising website.

                                                           iv.      Telling members about fee increase

1.      Reminding them if they renew before rates go up in Sept? they will get the “discounted” rate.

6)      Joel reviewed his study at the Oakland Conference

a.       Most important benefit listed was Professional Development courses and hours toward continuing teacher credential.

                                                               i.      15 hours of instruction + 30 hours homework needed to get 1 salary credit.

                                                             ii.      To get credit need 2 specific and 2 general (multi-cultural) classes

7)      Other possible events

a.       Event advertising free opportunities for Professional Development and travel this winter.

                                                               i.      There was good response to “Free this Summer” event.

b.      Movie Night

                                                               i.      Amanda will contact LA Times contact to see if we can get teachers invited to movie previews.

                                                             ii.      Also group viewing of historical movies with talks before or after.

                                                            iii.      How to use movies in the classroom.

                                                           iv.      Joel will contact Lions Gate.

8)      Sonia Nazario event

a.       Not very well attended because there were so many events taking place at the same time (many graduations).

                                                               i.      32 people attended.

b.      Mark suggested keeping and selling 50 books and giving the rest back to Aaron. ($7 profit each).

                                                               i.      At teachers conference

                                                             ii.      Constitution Day (Sept. 8 at Pasadena High.)

                                                            iii.      On website

1.      We could feature the books of authors who speak to SCSSA.

c.       Possibly find a free venue next time.

d.      Need to contact members individually (email?).

9)      SCSSA outreach to teacher training program.

a.       Martha – to USC, Teach for America

b.      Joel – to UCLA, BITSA

c.       Mark – to Loyolla and Cal State LA

10)  Constitution Day Sept 8

a.       SCSSA should have a booth and a banner.

11)  Amanda will be attending Summer Leadership Institute in Washington DC. July 24-27

a.       Will meet with Congressman Waxman to lobby for Social Studies teachers.
